The Reasons Owners Return to Nakara Time

Mechanical watchmaking is a narrow field. The movements used in watches made between the 1920s and the 1980s — the period that covers most of the vintage and inherited pieces we see — followed conventions that are no longer taught in mainstream watchmaking programmes. Knowing which lubricant suits a particular jewel type, or how to read a timing trace for a specific escapement design, comes from years of quiet practice rather than a short course.

Khun Prawit trained under a watchmaker in Chiang Mai who had been working since the 1970s, and that lineage shows in the approach. The work is unhurried, the tools are appropriate, and the decisions are made with the piece's history in mind.

Each piece follows the same sequence from intake to collection: written assessment, agreed scope and cost, disassembly and cleaning, replacement or fabrication of worn components, reassembly, regulation, timing confirmation, and documentation. Nothing is skipped to speed things along, and nothing is added beyond what was agreed.

This structure means that owners receive consistent results and that nothing is missed in the work. It also means that the service record we hand over on collection is complete and useful — a reference point for any future watchmaker who handles the piece.

We recognise that most watches coming to us carry more than monetary value. An inherited pocket watch, a first watch bought with a young person's wages, or a timepiece that has simply been running for thirty years without attention — each of these matters to its owner in ways that go beyond the service fee.

We take that seriously. Questions are welcome at any stage, photographs can be shared on request, and the owner's preference always takes precedence over our own aesthetic views. If you want to preserve the age of a dial, we preserve it. If you prefer a cleaner appearance, we discuss exactly what that would involve before touching anything.

The three service levels — routine service at ฿4,300, dial and hand restoration at ฿9,100, and complete vintage restoration at ฿14,900 — are starting points that reflect the typical scope of each type of work. Where a job proves simpler, the final cost reflects that. Where additional parts or fabrication are required, we discuss this before proceeding.

We are conscious that watchmaking in a Thai workshop carries different overheads than a branded service centre in Bangkok. We pass that on in our pricing, while using the same quality of lubricants, techniques, and documentation that any good watchmaker would use.

Every movement that leaves the workshop has been timed on a timing machine in multiple positions and confirmed to be running within acceptable tolerances. The timing results are recorded in the service document and shared with the owner.

This is not a formal certificate, but it is a genuine record — the kind of note that tells a future watchmaker that the piece was properly serviced and running well at a specific date. For vintage pieces especially, this documentation adds a layer of provenance that has quiet value.
